Why and how gratitude can
downright increase your happiness!

By: VALERIE ANNE WHITE Date: November 10, 2019

"Sit comfortably, take your favorite chair and if you want, go make yourself a little refill of coffee, I'll tell you a story..."

Every night, she fell asleep smiling in the bedroom of her Parisian apartment. At 86, this radiant old lady was doing this "little trick" allowing her to age happily. She had told her daily ritual to my uncle who, one evening, had crossed her path sitting cushy on the threshold of the door of the apartment he was renting in this common building, complaining about her misfortunes to whoever wanted to. To hear.

As the conversation progressed, she told him: "Every night, you know, before I go to bed, I go to my chest of drawers, on which I put a stone, my gratitude stone. I put my hands on the stone and I say aloud: "Thank you! Thank you for all the little joys of the day." Oh! These are not extraordinary things: a tender smile, a coffee with cream and a croissant, that chic item of clothing that I've been wanting for a while, a dove on my balcony , the call of a loved one..., I assure you that it does me a lot of good!"

He didn't immediately understand the essence of her message, thinking that she was probably luckier than him, period. But, one dark night when sleep did not come from dwelling on his misfortunes, he remembered this old lady and, having nothing to lose in view of the late hour, he tried, although skeptical, to think of something that made him feel good all day...

Nothing came to mind and the rumination started again. Finally, after about thirty minutes, he thought of the old lady again and tried again. Then, he gradually adopted his method. He thought back to the secretary he worked with, she had brought him coffee this morning and the memory transported him. He then saw himself relive the feeling of happiness that he had experienced earlier this morning, but without really caring about it. He let him up, his chest swelled, his hands went numb and, slowly, a smile appeared on his face. He savored it and finally fell asleep, in the minutes that followed.

“Obviously, he started again the next day and the day after, without ever stopping this little ritual which, not knowing why, did him the greatest good. Since then, he tells this story to all those who constantly complain about the lack, without taking into account the achievements. »

Do you know it, the concept of the stone of gratitude? This concept has existed for millennia and today it is scientifically proven that the daily practice of gratitude has beneficial effects on the lives of people who practice it.

HOW IT WORKS?
To make it simple: t our brain has a filter system called the reticular activating system. Basically, it allows you to let in only the information you agree with (your beliefs) and block others. If, for example, you believe you don't measure up to something, it will highlight every piece of evidence that supports that belief.

The reason for this weird behavior is that if your brain let it all in, your head would explode. That's why he can't take everything equally and needs a filter. Just look at the amount of information found on Facebook pages, it is impossible to see everything.

And this filter system, it's you who programmed it with the help of the people who have marked your life. If most of us don't have the life we really want, it's because we have bad mental patterns and limiting beliefs. The good news is that brain connections are made through repetition. Usually, a well-grounded thought will immediately go the shortest route.

For example, risk = danger. And if, at some point, you wanted to do something a little more risky like living off your passion, investing yourself emotionally with someone or leaving something that no longer suits you, your brain will to use all the evidence to confirm to you that it is risky. You will believe it and therefore risk giving up. Same thing if you think you have no value, that you always have to do more, that you are not able to change or that the people in your work do not like you and so on.

On the other hand, by starting to practice gratitude your brain, which does not know the difference between a gesture made and an imagined gesture, begins to create new connections between your neurons by identifying new proofs.

Thus, the path will be less and less automatic towards your old more negative thought patterns. Until one fine day when, through repetition, a direct link will be created with your new, more optimistic, open and joyful way of thinking, which will show you all new opportunities, encounters, different ideas, new perspectives and ways of doing things.

"As the stone of gratitude makes it possible to thank life much more often than usual, it is a super powerful way to multiply what we dwell on and this, in an exponential way. »

Honestly, any pebble can do, but I like using this one.
When I started this ritual myself, I wanted a stone that represented my shift in perspective and since quartz is known to be a stone of well-being, it was perfect.

Linked to light, it highlights everything by amplifying the energy level of everything that comes into contact with it. I immediately felt drawn to it. But, the most important thing is that you find a stone you like and keep it as your little amulet. Some even drag it in their pockets and thank each time they touch it.

Now it's up to you to create your little ritual and start living and attracting the things that bring you serenity and bring you more joy.

"Sit comfortably, take your favorite chair and if you want, go make yourself a little refill of coffee, I'll tell you a story..."

“In another era, I created the sets for the various rooms in a renowned furniture store. I chose the bedding, the color of the walls, the accessories and the furniture. Picture frames, I've hung hundreds and hundreds of them in my life. And for some time now, I have seen beautiful gallery walls on several of my favorite Instagram accounts. »

It also makes me want to do it again! But since I don't have big walls at home and I no longer work in a store, I thought I would satisfy this creative impulse that spring brings back to life… by giving you my best tips and my inspirations!

Making a gallery wall worthy of a magazine is a complex art and some will not risk it for lack of confidence, but with these little tricks there is no reason to be afraid.

CHOOSE THE OBJECTS TO HANG
As it is eclectic, we can put everything that speaks to us or that touches our heart: painting, illustration, photos, portrait, vintage frame of different sizes. What I like is to mix in a distinctive object: it can be a mirror, a clock or a beautiful wall candle holder. This addition helps break up the rigid rhythm of rectangular shapes.

TIP FOR A HARMONIOUS RESULT
You can put whatever you want, but there are rules to follow to create visual harmony. The trick is to create links by choosing similar colors, materials or textures. For example, here, it seems heterogeneous, but the gold is found in two of the frames, then the black of some paintings is also found in the frames of others and the silver of the mirror in the frame on the left. Nothing is left to chance!!!

HOW TO PROCEED
Start by cutting out the shapes of your frames and objects from kraft paper, newspaper or cardboard. Then, lay them out on the ground to do tests by choosing a centerpiece (often the largest) and embroidering around it. For example, here the centerpiece is the frame with trees. In the visual sequence, we first look at her. The eye will continue to read the whole afterwards. This piece is therefore given a central location.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

AT WHAT HEIGHT SHOULD I POSITION MY FRAMES?
The middle of your frame or your composition must reach your eye level, approximately 5'.

WHAT SHOULD I HANG MY FRAMES WITH ?
I have hung over 1000 frames in my life and only one has fallen off.. oops, yes, but that was because I had hung so many frames often in the same place that there was nothing solid left ! But what I mean is that it is not necessary to put in butterfly screws or dowels that make holes as big as dollars. A simple frame hook is enough or a good old nail driven at 45 degrees if the frame is small.

And if your boyfriend freaks out because you're going to MAKE HOLES IN THE WALL, there's always that.

HOW TO PROCESS A SET OF FRAMES?
In the end, it must form an entity as if it became a single frame. Generally, the space between each piece should be a maximum of 2 to 3''.

There may be gaps, I advise to leave only one at most 2 and the gap should not exceed 10''.

COMPOSITIONS

OPTION 1:
For composition, some like to fill the walls. Personally, my philosophy is as usual: less is more. That is to say that if you fill your wall completely, you will inevitably miss a few frames in passing in your reading. The eye will no longer know what to look at and will be led to look elsewhere. So, even if you like 25 frames, go for it by elimination to keep only the best choices and above all don't hesitate to choose larger works than several small ones. Believe me the result will speak for itself!

"As the stone of gratitude makes it possible to thank life much more often than usual, it is a super powerful way to multiply what we dwell on and this, in an exponential way. »

“So, we start from a centerpiece and we do a reading in a circle (or rectangle) to come back to the centerpiece. »

Honestly, any pebble can do, but I like using this one.
When I started this ritual myself, I wanted a stone that represented my shift in perspective and since quartz is known to be a stone of well-being, it was perfect.

Here are examples of composition that are in my opinion the most successful... (Because, yes, I also studied art history and believe me, composition is the key to the greatest conductors 👩🏻‍🎨 Nothing is left to chance! )

OPTION 2:
If you want to do a complete wall, you have to treat it as a complete work; as if it were a large painting. It doesn't have to be straight, but you will have to draw an imaginary rectangle on your wall in which you will work. Then, the chosen pieces should be aesthetically similar in terms of colors, materials and finishes.

With these tricks, you can't go wrong, but if you like to dare, know that the rules are also made to be broken!
